Practical discipleship for the 21st century

Resources for Churches & Ministries

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves
and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23)

As church leaders, we know that we have a Great Commission: to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt 28:19). But salvation is not a one-time event: It is a life-changing experience. We must also follow the rest of Jesus' command: "teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matt 28:20).  If we do not focus on both parts of the Great Commission - evangelizing and discipling - we will not see the growth and power in our churches that we would like to see nor will we receive the depth of blessings for which we long.

It is easy get wrapped up in the activities of being God’s hands and feet in the world. We offer social services and mission projects, Sunday school and choir practice. Sometimes we do this from passion and other times we do it on autopilot.  However, the life of Christian discipleship is a wonderful adventure if we are willing to trust God to lead us – both as individual Christians and as a church, the Body of Christ. As we grow in deeper relationship with God we are changed to be like Jesus and are empowered to change the world as a result (Rom 12:2; Jn 14:12).

As we think about the requirements of the Great Comission, we realize what an awesome responsibility has been given us. Fortunately, we do not have to do these things alone and we certainly cannot do them in our own power. Jesus has promised to be with us always and has also promised that the Holy Spirit will teach us all we need to know and remind us of what Jesus has taught us (Matt 28:20; Jn 14:26). Further, God has given us the Church - the Body of Christ made up of all Christians. God uses our fellow Christians to encourage and support us and to help us bear our burdens (1 Thess 5:11; Gal 6:2 ).
